Danyson Tavares Visits studioDSK

We welcomed Danyson Tavares, the new Executive Director of the Boston Society for Architecture, to studioDSK to talk about the BSA’s upcoming move, the meaning behind ‘The Stoop,’ and how future spaces can foster openness, dialogue, and community connection.

This spring we had the pleasure of welcoming Danyson Tavares, the newly appointed Executive Director of the Boston Society for Architecture, to studioDSK. His visit came on the heels of the BSA’s announcement that it intends to relocate from its longtime home at 290 Congress Street, a move that signals a bold new chapter for the organization.

One topic that surfaced in our conversation was the disappearance of “The Stoop,” both a literal and figurative feature that represents accessible, civic-minded architectural space. For Danyson, "The Stoop" represents an open threshold where architecture meets the public: a place to linger, exchange ideas, and be part of a broader cultural dialogue. Its absence raises deeper questions about how design invites or discourages participation.

Danyson emphasized the importance of such communal elements in architectural design, noting how spaces like these facilitate spontaneous interactions and foster a sense of community among professionals and the public alike. He expressed a desire to carry forward this ethos of openness and accessibility in the BSA's future endeavors.

The decision to relocate stems from a strategic vision to adapt to the changing needs of the architectural community and the city at large. While the new location has yet to be announced, the BSA aims to create a space that continues to encourage collaboration, innovation, and public engagement.

At studioDSK, we resonate with the BSA's commitment to designing spaces that not only serve functional purposes but also cultivate community and dialogue. As the BSA embarks on this new chapter, we look forward to seeing how they will reinterpret and reinvigorate the concept of communal architectural spaces in their future home.
