BOILerworks

BoilerWorks is studioDSK’s in-house fabrication and modeling lab — a creative engine where ideas move off the page and into the physical world. It’s a space driven by curiosity, precision, and experimentation, where sketches become prototypes and materials shape thinking. More than just a workshop, BoilerWorks gives form to possibility through physical models, mockups, and fabrication that bridges traditional craftsmanship with digital technology.
This hands-on environment allows our team to test, build, and explore the tangible side of architecture. We use it not only to validate ideas, but to innovate — to discover, iterate, and push past convention. Whether prototyping a complex joint, fabricating a custom detail, or developing new spatial strategies, BoilerWorks keeps us connected to process, scale, and materiality.
BoilerWorks is also a mindset: iterative, fearless, and grounded in making. It fuels cross-disciplinary collaboration and keeps the creative feedback loop between concept and execution alive. By thinking through our hands and designing with intention, we reaffirm that how something is made matters just as much as how it looks.

AIA Framework for Design Excellence

Built Environment Values

Every project is an opportunity to shape a more resilient, just, and connected world. These values are grounded in the belief that thoughtful design can improve lives, strengthen ecosystems, and adapt over time. At studioDSK, we believe that architecture is inseparable from the environment it inhabits. Our work is driven by a deep responsibility to design with intention — balancing human needs with the health of natural systems. We consider every aspect of the built environment, from energy and water use to community equity and ecosystem resilience.

Informed by the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, the ten principles below guide how we approach architecture, planning, and interiors — from strategy to materiality, from big ideas to lasting details.
[  Intergration  ]
01
We believe design achieves its greatest impact when ideas, systems, and environments are interconnected. Our work brings architecture, planning, and interiors into dialogue — weaving spaces that reflect mission, culture, and community at every scale.
[ Intergration ]
[  Equitable Communities  ]
02
We design spaces that foster access, belonging, and opportunity.  Through deep listening and collaboration, we create environments where all voices are valued and every individual has the potential to thrive.
[ Equitable Communities ]
[  Ecosystems  ]
03
Our work honors the ecosystems that sustain life. We shape built environments that protect biodiversity, respect natural systems, and enhance the ecological health of a place.
[ Ecosystems ]
[  Water  ]
04
Water is a vital, finite resource. We design with a deep awareness of water’s value — conserving, managing, and celebrating water across landscapes, buildings, and infrastructure.
[ Water ]
[  Economy  ]
05
Great design balances vision with stewardship. We create spaces that maximize value over time — carefully aligning resources, goals, and opportunities to deliver enduring returns for clients and communities.
[ Economy ]
[  Energy  ]
06
Every project is an opportunity to reduce environmental impact and advance a regenerative future. We design for energy performance, integrating passive strategies, efficient systems, and renewables to exceed today’s sustainability standards.
[ Energy]
[  Well-being  ]
07
Health and well-being are at the core of human-centered design. We create environments that nurture physical, emotional, and social wellness — shaping spaces that uplift daily life through light, air, connection, and comfort.
[ Well-being ]
[  Resources  ]
08
Responsible design considers the full life cycle of materials. We select, specify, and build with intention — reducing waste, reusing resources, and sourcing materials that support both people and the planet.
[ Resources ]
[  Change  ]
09
The most enduring spaces are those ready to adapt. We design buildings and campuses with resilience, flexibility, and long-term stewardship in mind — ensuring spaces can evolve alongside the needs they serve.
[ Change ]
[  Discovery  ]
10
Every project is a catalyst for learning, iteration, and innovation. We embrace curiosity throughout the design process, using research, prototyping, and feedback to expand possibilities and deliver richer outcomes.

Commitments

AIA 2030[Sustainability Action Plan]

Architects and designers can help improve the health of the planet and people by giving careful thought to how they evaluate products and finishes.

Healthy Materials Pledge

The Healthy Materials Pledge Guide is a resource on how we can holistically evaluate building products using the Architecture & Design Materials Pledge.

Sustainability in Practice

AIA 2030 Commitment
We are proud signatories of the AIA 2030 Commitment — a shared pledge to design carbon-neutral buildings by the year 2030.
The AIA 2030 Commitment aligns our work with aggressive targets for energy reduction and building performance. As part of our annual reporting, we track predicted energy use intensity (pEUI), operational carbon, and lighting power density across active projects. This process deepens our accountability and drives more informed, climate-forward design decisions.
Sustainability Action Plan
Our Sustainability Action Plan outlines the specific steps we’re taking to embed environmental responsibility into every aspect of our practice.

This internal roadmap focuses on measurable goals across operations, project delivery, design strategies, and materials. We use it to guide decision-making within our teams and in collaboration with our clients and consultants. Updated yearly, the plan reflects both our commitments and our evolving understanding of what it means to practice sustainably.
Healthy Materials Guide
Our Healthy Materials Guide helps us make informed, ethical choices about what goes into the spaces we design.
Health Materials Guide Image cover
The guide prioritizes transparency, low-toxicity, and lifecycle impact in all material selections. It supports healthier environments for building occupants while aligning with our broader sustainability and equity goals. By sharing material research across teams, we ensure our standards evolve with science, supply chains, and our clients’ values.
