The Engine CEO Retreat: Scaling Tough Tech
Becky Bermont Facilitates Leadership Sessions at The Engine CEO Retreat
Introduction
Last week, studioDSK Senior Advisor Becky Bermont facilitated leadership sessions at The Engine's CEO Retreat, a gathering of founders and executive leaders from The Engine's community of Tough Tech companies. The Engine supports entrepreneurs developing breakthrough technologies in climate innovation, advanced manufacturing, biotechnology, artificial intelligence, and other emerging fields.
Navigating Relentless Demands and Complex Problems
The retreat brought together leaders navigating the challenges that accompany organizational growth, even in the earliest stages of a company's development. Topics included building effective teams, managing stakeholder expectations, framing organizational culture, and aligning around a shared vision. As part of the program, Bermont facilitated discussions focused on organizational management and navigating difficult conversations.
For studioDSK, these conversations are familiar territory. Through our Advisory + Planning practice, we support educational institutions, nonprofit organizations, research enterprises, and mission-driven organizations with strategic planning, organizational design, governance support, leadership development, stakeholder engagement, and long-range institutional visioning.
"What was clear throughout these conversations was the level of commitment Tough Tech founders have to their businesses and their missions, and the speed and agility with which they must make decisions about people, resources, and partnerships. There isn't time to wait," noted Bermont.
The Engine's CEO Retreat was an opportunity for early-stage CEOs to pause, hear from one another, provide support, and exchange learnings in a safe, candid environment. The audience heard from Northwestern University's David Schonthal on fueling the adoption of new products. CEO's also heard from Commonwealth Fusion Systems' Steve Renter interviewed by The Engine CEO, Emily Knight, on instilling a strong company culture from the very beginning.

While the organizations represented at the retreat ranged from early-stage startups to rapidly growing technology ventures, many of the leadership challenges discussed are universal. Leaders are often tasked with balancing competing priorities while maintaining clarity of purpose and organizational alignment.
In Summary
The conversations at The Engine's CEO Retreat highlighted something studioDSK sees every day: organizations achieve their greatest impact when leadership, strategy, culture, and mission work together.
