Turtle Rock Farm

Westport, Massachusetts

Kitchen Pot Rack Sketch

Turtle Rock Farm takes its name and spirit from the river landscape it occupies. From the approach, a centered entry porch, black shutters, and cobble-edged gravel court set a familiar New England tone. The composition places two living wings to the east and west, with a one-story link between them. At the heart of the plan is the Orangerie, a south-facing garden room that opens to a fenced parterre and supports a roof deck above. This court becomes the daily center, bringing light deep into the house and making a clear path out to the lawn and meadow. The plan celebrates traditional farmhouse elements while supporting modern living. A coffered ceiling and paneled fireplace set the character of the living room. The kitchen is practical and refined with painted cabinetry, honed stone, and a china pantry that glows like a light box beyond the work zone. A garden room with a long stone sink and open shelves handles potting and cut flowers, so the kitchen stays clear for cooking and gathering. Throughout, trim, casings, and built-ins are scaled for comfort and kept consistent so the whole reads as one house.

Bedrooms are quiet retreats with en suite baths and water view balconies. Curved shingle hoods add weather protection and a gentle profile to the elevation. In the primary suite, soft green murals and full-height drapery carry the landscape indoors while large windows frame long views to pasture and river. The roof deck above the Orangerie provides another outlook and a private outdoor room set within the overall mass. Materials and details are chosen for longevity and fit to place. Cedar shingles weather to silver. Stone thresholds and walks pick up the tones of local ledge. Glazed doors and paired windows promote daylight and cross ventilation, reducing reliance on artificial lighting for much of the year. Service spaces and mechanical systems are tucked away to keep main rooms clear and to support the rhythms of a working property. Turtle Rock Farm is both new and familiar. It learns from the region’s farmhouse lineage, sits comfortably in the fields that surround it, and offers a sequence of rooms that stay connected to land and water from morning to night.

Uniting river and farm

Composition

The Orangerie and garden court anchor the house and link interiors to the site. French doors, continuous window alignments, and a roof deck above the Orangerie create direct paths to light, air, and views, while the two gabled wings keep the overall mass low and settled in the landscape.
