Seaside

South Dartmouth, Massachusetts

Conceptual Elevation Hand Sketch

Seaside sits on a stretch of New England coast where water and sky set the pace of daily life. The house and pool align with long views to the horizon, and the garage steps back to form a court that feels sheltered yet open to the breeze. From the first approach, the architecture reads as a modern take on the Shingle Style: hipped gambrel rooflines, cedar shingles, white trim, and clear proportion brought forward with simple lines and generous glass. The exterior is quiet and transparent where it meets the horizon. Sliding glass walls open the living and dining room to terraces so gatherings spill outdoors without effort. The poolside cabana acts as a second kitchen and a day pavilion with a half bath and a circular mahogany outdoor shower that turns routine into ritual. The two-car garage holds a guest suite above, so extended family and friends can stay close while keeping privacy. Inside, studioDSK Interiors keeps the mood light and relaxed. Natural finishes, indoor outdoor fabrics, and contemporary furnishings create a durable neutral palette that handles salt, sun, and sand. Sand-toned white oak floors draw the eye to the water. A sleek dining pendant, subtle carpet lines, and the vertical pinstripes of the sofa point gently toward the sea.

The kitchen looks through woven shades to a wide arc of coastline. Neolith counters float along the island, paired with a raised walnut bar and clear acrylic stools. The open plan puts cooking, conversation, and kids drifting in from the beach into one easy flow. The main bath sets a calm tone with light porcelain tile, polished nickel fittings, and a custom tub by studioDSK. An all-glass shower spans inside and out, divided by a sliding panel so a warm day or a cold breeze can both feel welcome. Performance underpins the calm. A geothermal system serves the house and the pool, cutting energy use and keeping comfort steady through summer heat and winter wind. The envelope is tuned for the shore with shaded glazing, deep eaves, and hardware that resists salt. Materials age well, and the plan flexes for large summer weeks and quiet off-season stays, so the house belongs to the place year-round. Seaside is built for family life on the coast. It balances tradition with a clear modern sensibility and turns the rituals of arrival, cooking, swimming, and watching the horizon into the center of the day.
