North Shore Meadow House

Wenham, Massachusetts

Site Plan Concept Sketch

The design of North Shore Meadow House deconstructs the traditional silhouette of a classic New England farmhouse and reunites its forms, the Main House and Barn, with a modern scheme. The Main House is divided into two gable structures, bound by a double-height glass and steel entry foyer. The barn is linked to the Main House through a glass connector with operable doors. The home feels like it has been through a couple of phases of additions over the years, reflected in its gable structures and exterior materials palette.

“With a client who has an extensive background in forestry, we were careful to choose non-rainforest woods, providing us with a unique aesthetic that still nods to the vernacular of North Shore, Massachusetts.” The home is clad in Cambia, a combination of Poplar and Ash, with hints of Larch, and Red and White Cedar throughout. At the front entrance of the property immersed in beautiful native plantings sits the Client’s boutique shop, The Copper Shed. In the back of North Shore Meadow House lives a meadow cloaked in morning fog and sounds of wildlife.

Immersed in Nature

Composition

A series of site plan studies began to unveil our site priorities, maximizing views of the landscape in the front of the property, preserving the historic New England fieldstone wall, and nestling the house into the meadow behind. The goal was to minimize the amount of formal lawn space, preserving the natural features of the site.

Down to the Details

The garden room features five glass lift-and-slide doors that wrap around the living room, opening the home to the meadow and patio, and filling the interiors with natural light. Our team of interior designers collaborated with our architects from the beginning of the project, blending the interiors into hybrid spaces that feel exterior-zoned in the Summer and closed and cozy through the colder New England seasons. The open floor plan was designed to take advantage of the site and allows for a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors, utilizing skylights and in-swinging windows to introduce light and air to core spaces. Central to the kitchen is an oversized zinc counter meant to wear and patina over time. In the corner sits a bespoke kitchen banquette that complements the counter. The lead interior designer on the project spoke fondly of the clients' interests and desires for their new space: “This project was especially fun because our client was inspired by British-style decorations and wasn’t scared of color.” Each of the supporting rooms features a bold and unique wall color, adding a punchy spirit to the lighter kitchen and living areas.
