Farm + Coast Market

Dartmouth, Massachusetts

Photograph from the Farm & Coast Grand Re-Opening Party

Expanding within the cornerstone building of Padanaram Village, Farm & Coast’s goal was to solidify and enhance its existing brand, but in a larger footprint. Despite a 60% increase in space, the renovations successfully maintain the intimacy of a local market, replete with spontaneous encounters with neighbors and friends. Two new architectural elements bookend the space, serving as the backdrop for a regularly rotating display of seasonal baked goods, produce, and gifts. The reenvisioned bakery, separated from the café to improve flow, serves as one anchor, while the bar, with matching architectural detailing, millwork, and high-end finishes, serves as the second anchor, framing a central market and the portal to an expanded wine cellar.

A 40’ deli run in the heart of the market showcases an impressive display of prepared foods, imported cheeses, fresh pasta, and local meat. Hand-painted signage assists in wayfinding, paying tribute to simple traditional shopkeeper typefaces. An expanded material palette supplements the familiar subway tiles, European oak, and nautical chart overhead with blackened steel accents, walnut table-tops, tailored banquettes, and a rich paint color, elevating the space with durable, multi-purpose finishes. Unassuming design elements harken back to the area’s maritime history: wood ceiling tiles assembled from salvaged boat hulls, coat hooks from antique boat cleats, a totem sculpture from retired nautical rope, and raw porcelain lights that float above the bar like sailboats, all of which combine to provide a tactile warmth to the new space.

Farm & Coast Market expanded, staying true to casual coastal community feel

Composition

Fresh bread displayed in the bakery and enchanting lights above the bar beckon visitors to explore a reimagined Farm & Coast. This neighborhood staple still serves the community with fresh, local food, convenient provisions, and a comfortable dining spot for the whole family. To improve circulation and flow, the bakery is now located away from the café, providing more space for queuing at the barista and a dining experience protected from the hustle and bustle of a busy market. An expanded version of the original ceiling-mounted nautical chart hovers above the new central market, maintaining Farm & Coast’s identity and sparking conversation.

Down to the Details

Farm & Coast’s renovation and expansion incorporates references to the region’s maritime history and elevates the space with rich new finishes that provide both comfort and delight.
