Oasis Estate

Moskito Island, British Virgin Islands

Axonometric sketch

Perched along the rocky spine of Moskito Island, Oasis Estate unfolds like a sweeping brushstroke across the sea and sky. Sculptural hardscape elements, curved terraces, and a shallow ribbon-like pool work together as a single gesture, carving interstitial outdoor rooms while framing an uninterrupted panorama of the Caribbean. The composition blends cues from traditional Balinese architecture with a sharply modern vocabulary, yielding a residence that is both rooted in place and unmistakably contemporary. Environmental performance underlies every design move. Photovoltaic panels and solar hotwater collectors nest discreetly atop roof planes and double as skylights over several balconies. Green roofs add a layer of insulation and stabilize the slope; artificial turf on select terraces provides barefoot comfort without irrigation. Passive cooling is prioritized through operable glass walls, deeply modeled sunshades, and a pool that promotes evaporative cooling across adjacent interiors. An energy model informed the placement of openings, the thickness of insulation, and the specification of high-efficiency mechanical systems. Locally quarried stone reduced transport impacts, and permeable pavers mitigate stormwater runoff. Hurricane-resilient screens stand ready to shield glazing when storms threaten.

The estate rewards exploration with memorable moments. A trellised pool bar anchors outdoor life, its wooden canopy shading swimmers perched on underwater stools. At dusk, a firerock appears to float on the pool surface, its reflection mingling with fiberoptic star lights set into the basin. A free-falling waterfall announces arrival at the main entry, while hidden stairways carry residents to secret lounges or the roof deck, where the Milky Way stretches unbroken across the tropical night. Throughout, cabinetry and vanities hover above the floor, curved cove lighting glows softly, and backlit panels lend the interior a gentle radiance. Oasis Estate meets the strict guidelines of Moskito Island by translating Balinese precedent into a contemporary vocabulary of flowing forms and seamless thresholds. It answers complex structural, climatic, and cultural demands with elegance, crafting a sanctuary that hovers between land and sea while offering guests a restorative, light-filled refuge that lives up to its name.

Along the Ridgeline

Composition

The estate’s plan follows the ridge of the hillside, stacking uses vertically to balance community and privacy. At entry level, a stone gangway bridges the pool and leads into a double-height Great Room that flows out to the water’s edge. Here, guests gather for dining, playing, and casual conversation while enjoying breezes that drift in through eighty-foot curved glass panels. One floor above, a piano nobile contains intimate family lounges, daybeds, and terraces set behind wide overhangs that temper the tropical sun. The uppermost level hosts the primary suite, spa, and family bedrooms, each connected to a roof terrace that offers complete seclusion and a sweeping 360° view. Guest villas step down beside the pool, their private decks and outdoor showers arranged so that every occupant maintains a sightline to the horizon.

Down to the Details

The Oasis Estate is currently under phase II + III construction, introducing a new fitness/wellness space, additional guest suites, and an outdoor seaside dining pavilion.
